An orthotic is an externally applied prefabricated or custom-made device (as in a brace or a splint) prescribed by a physician and fit by an orthotic technician. Orthotics address the biomechanical needs of a patient and are used to modify the structural and/or functional characteristics of the neuromuscular or musculoskeletal systems. Objectives of a properly fit orthotic may be to:
Prescription
In order for us to provide the correct orthotic device, we require a physician's prescription for every patient.
The prescription should at a minimum include the patient's name, diagnosis/injury, orthotic required, and any range-of-motion instructions.
Appointment
We typically have same-day appointment availability. Please call 212.297.0362 to schedule an appointment or to speak to a technician. Our staff can also help answer any questions about prescriptions or insurance coverage over the phone.
Patient Assessment/Fitting
Our technicians evaluate every patient to ensure that the proper orthotic is dispensed and every patient's needs and expectations are discussed and met. We consult with our patients and spend the time needed to ensure that our orthotics are fit correctly, are comfortable, and are doing what they are supposed to do. There are a lot of options out there, and we have a unique knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of different types of off-the-shelf and custom products. Therefore, we do not pride ourselves on simply fitting the correct orthotic device based on a patient's prescription. We pride ourselves on fitting patients based on their specific needs with the right model from the right manufacturer—along with the appropriate instruction, customized adjustment and follow-up care.
Patients are encouraged to call us with any questions, updates or issues.
The term "orthotics" is often thought of synonymously with foot orthotics. But If you have made it this far you now know that foot orthotics are just one type of orthotic, and you should congratulate yourself for knowing more about orthotics than many others!
We have relationships with exceptional off-the-shelf foot orthotic manufacturers and custom foot orthotic fabrication facilities and would be happy to assist patients in finding the right device for their needs.
